Hey Chuck! It's Ben your student from ages ago. Just wanted to get in contact with you and say I miss you man. Your teaching, patience, wisdom and chillness has stuck with me my whole life. My parents got divorced which resulted in me not being able to go to progressive anymore and I hate how I never got to say goodbye, give you a hug and say my thanks. Hi I’m new to traditional grip . Which technique is best for double stroke rolls and which for fast single stroke rolls ?

Is the first kick drum on beat 1? Or is the first accented snare beat 1? Great feel!

From a physics standpoint, in matched grip, the push/pull or squeeze techinique applies upward motion (with the finger(s)) behind the fulcrum of the thumb and pointer (middle) finger, forcing the front of the stick back down for the 2nd hit. In traditional, the squeezing of the hand is basically using the pointer and middle fingers to apply a downward force in front of the fulcrum of the thumb pocket, pushing the stick back down for the 2nd hit. I'm a nerd, so for me, understanding WHY a certain hand motion causes a certain stick motion helps me immensely.

i Chuck I really have a lot of difficulty performing this control with my fingers having seen your videos many times.. I can only perform rebounds with only my thumb and open hand without rotating the wrist but when I close my index finger everything stops I swear Chuck that I would like to learn more than other things this technique to perform rolls like marching bands

Hey Chuck, just watching V.2.0, it's awesome. I say this because most instructional clips re: traditional grip are great however, they lack one crucial element, the slow, close up & explanatory content that you present. I started off at the age of 11, I am now 65, in a Scottish side drum class. The teacher did not explain the processes and break them down as you do my friend, that's why I'm giving you a HUUUUGGGGGGEE THUMBS UP. I have subscribed and I seriously hope you continue on this style of journey. It's concise, it's caring, it's informative and has seen great results in my playing style and understanding of this grip, more that any other on the web, great work. May I ask also, you seem to have a "grip coating" on your Vic Firths, is this from V.F. or did you put it on there yourself. Look forward to hearing back, regards Kev in Australia

I am an older drummer/teacher I’ve had problem with my left side. I had want was called bracile plexopithy or as it called a heart attack of the nervous system… it took me a long time to rehabilitate 1 to 2 years to unfold my arm and hand much time of at all of trying to turn my wrist left hand …Have you ever come across something like this??

Sounds a little along the lines of what Steve Gadd showed in a video, going way back granted. I think he played a straight eighth groove and threw in a triplet three stroke roll using a double on the hat's and or snare, sounds really good either way. Great video Chuck, as always. 👍

It's interesting to me to see how you set up there Chuck, I used to have problems getting my snare height in the right place for me, I noticed that it changed on different rehearsals and gigs. I later worked out that the use of mics and other members of the band overplaying, or just being too loud, there's a number of reasons for that too, reflective walls, no dampening of high frequencies around the kit etc. There are a plethora of reasons that can take us away from where we need to be in our playing and how that affects us. I've been told I can overthink but in this case I'm sure it's good to know what to expect before it can happen. Taken from just seeing you play and obviously listening to, that's how it should be done. The problems we can face from rushing to a venue and or things going wrong can amount to such whereby we overlook the shortfalls.

Flan flam or flam souffle :) I'm getting into this for some fun plus you make it sound like a flam on reinforced echo effect.

I started w/traditional last week, & I love the level of control I already have relative to my 2 years on matched. You explain everything beautiful! My father was a drummer who passed away recently. Growing up, he would show me traditional grip. I never really thought about seriously playing drums until he passed. Unfortunately like my dad, I have some arthritis in my left thumb palm area which makes it difficult to rebound. Any advice may be helpful? Thank you
